This article is about how many trading days are there in 2024. Understanding the number of trading days in a year is crucial for traders and investors who rely on the stock market for their financial activities. In 2024. there are 252 trading days, but this number can vary slightly from year to year due to holidays and weekends.

How Many Trading Days Are There in 2024?

If you are a day trader or a long-term investor, you might be interested in knowing how many trading days are there in 2024. This information can help you plan your trading strategy, budget your time and money, and avoid missing out on market opportunities.

According to the official NYSE calendar, there are exactly 252 trading days in 2024. Here is how we get this number:

- There are 366 days in 2024. which is a leap year.

- There are 104 weekend days (52 Saturdays and 52 Sundays).

- There are nine holidays that close the market: New Year’s Day (January 1st), Martin Luther King, Jr Day (January 15th), Presidents’ Day (February 19th), Good Friday (March 29th), Memorial Day (May 27th), Independence Day (July 4th), Labor Day (September 2nd), Thanksgiving Day (November 28th), and Christmas Day (December 25th).

- There are two shortened sessions that count as half a day each: The day before Independence Day (July 3rd) and the day after Thanksgiving Day (November 29th).

Therefore, the number of trading days in 2024 is:

366 - 104 - 9 - 1 = 252

How to Count the Trading Days?

A trading day is a day when the major stock exchanges, such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq, are open for business. During a trading day, you can buy and sell stocks, ETFs, options, futures, and other securities. The regular trading hours for these exchanges are from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time (ET), Monday to Friday, except for holidays and shortened sessions.

There are nine holidays that close the stock exchanges every year. They are:

- New Year’s Day (January 1st)

- Martin Luther King, Jr Day (The third Monday of January)

- Presidents’ Day (The third Monday in February)

- Good Friday (The Friday before Easter Sunday)

- Memorial Day (The last Monday of May)

- Independence Day (July 4th)

- Labor Day (The first Monday in September)

- Thanksgiving Day (The fourth Thursday of November)

- Christmas Day (December 25th)

If any of these holidays falls on a weekend, the stock market will observe it on the closest weekday. For example, if Independence Day falls on a Saturday, the market will close on the preceding Friday. If it falls on a Sunday, the market will close on the following Monday.

There are also two shortened trading sessions every year, when the market closes at 1:00 p.m. ET instead of 4:00 p.m. ET. They are:

- The day before Independence Day (July 3rd)

- The day after Thanksgiving Day (November 26th)

As you can see, the number of trading days in a year varies depending on how many weekends and holidays there are. In general, there are around 250 to 252 trading days in a year . Knowing this number can help you set realistic goals for your trading performance, calculate your average daily return, and compare your results with other traders or benchmarks.
