Governments and central banks must act quickly when a country, or in the instance of the Covid-19 pandemic, the entire world, is, is, hit by a catalyst. The global economy experienced a significant fall after lockdowns were enacted after the pandemic struck in March 2020. So, how much money did the Fed print in 2020?

How Much Money Did The Fed Print In 2020?

In response, the US Federal Reserve produced trillions of dollars in an apparent desperate move to boost the economy.

To keep the economy afloat throughout the pandemic, the US implemented "quantitative easing." "Quantitative easing" refers to the practice of printing money to support a thriving economy (QE). In the aftermath of the 2008 stock market meltdown, QE was initially launched in March 2009. According to City AM, the Federal Reserve printed almost $3.3 trillion in 2020 alone, which is equal to one-fifth of all US currencies that were in circulation during that year.

Who Decides To Print Money In The US?

Although it does not produce currency notes directly, the US Federal Reserve manages the country's money supply and determines how many are created annually by the Treasury Department.

Particularly in the years following the Great Recession, people in the media frequently refer to the Fed as "creating money." They typically signify that the Fed is expanding the money supply, most contentiously by way of a controversial program of asset purchases known as quantitative easing (QE).

In order to inject more money into the economy, the Fed purchased financial securities from financial institutions totaling several trillion dollars, the majority of which were US government bonds.

In simple words, the main driver of QE is to promote borrowing. Because banks offer so many loans, interest rates often stay low, making borrowing affordable.

For instance, Trading Economics estimates that in March 2020, the Federal Reserve's "fed funds rate," which is comparable to the UK's base rate, will fall from 1% to 0.25%.

During the epidemic, a 0.25% interest rate let people borrow money as inexpensively as possible in the hopes that they would then spend it on products and services to stimulate the economy.

Summary

This is an illustration of how QE helps the nation in the short run by encouraging people to keep spending money during a difficult economic period. And the answer for “how much money did the Fed print in 2020?”
