The mean is the mathematical average of a set of two or more numbers. This article will discuss, "How To Find The Mean? Formula with Example Calculations." Let's get started.

What Is a Mean?

Mean is the simple mathematical average of a set of two or more numbers.

The mean for a given set of numbers can be computed in more than one way, including the arithmetic mean method, which uses the sum of the numbers in the series, and the geometric mean method, which is the average of a set of products. However, all the primary methods of computing a simple average produce the same approximate result most of the time.

How To Find The Mean?

I will explain how to calculate both methods, along with their respective formulas.

1. Arithmetic Mean:

The arithmetic mean, also known as the average, is commonly used to find the typical value of a set of numbers. It is calculated by summing up all the values in the set and dividing the sum by the total count of values.

Formula:

Arithmetic Mean = (Sum of Values) / (Total Count)

Mathematical notation:

μ = (Σx) / n

Where:

- μ represents the arithmetic mean

- Σx represents the sum of all the values

-n represents the total count of values

For example, let's find the arithmetic mean of the following set of numbers: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10.

Sum of Values (Σx) = 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10 = 30

Total Count (n) = 5

Arithmetic Mean (μ) = 30 / 5 = 6

Therefore, the arithmetic mean of the given set is 6.

2. Geometric Mean:

The geometric mean is used to find the average rate of change or growth between a set of numbers. It is calculated by multiplying all the values together and then taking the nth root of the product, where n is the total count of values.

Formula:

Geometric Mean = (Product of Values)^(1 / Total Count)

Mathematical notation:

G = (x1 * x2 * x3 * ... * xn)^(1 / n)

For example, let's find the geometric mean of the following set of numbers: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32.

Product of Values = 2 * 4 * 8 * 16 * 32 = 32,768

Total Count (n) = 5

Geometric Mean (G) = (32,768)^(1 / 5) ≈ 8

Therefore, the geometric mean of the given set is approximately 8.

It's important to note that the arithmetic mean is commonly used for typical averages, while the geometric mean is more suitable for situations involving rates of change, growth, or multiplication factors.

How To Find The Mean? Formula with Example Calculations - hopefully, this article can help you to get some knowledge.
