What Does Stop-Loss Mean? Stop-loss orders are frequently used by traders who use breakouts to start trades in case the breakout is unsuccessful. Let's take a closer look.

What Does Stop-Loss Mean?

It is an order that you can put through a crypto exchange, sometimes known as a "stop loss" or a "stop-market order," directing the exchange to sell an asset when its price reaches a certain level. As such, an essential piece of risk management for leveraged trading.

You'll need to be clear about your stop price, the sell price, and the amount of the order as well as the price at which the order will take effect (how much of the asset you want to sell). The exchange will automatically Carry out your order and sell the specific amount at the specified price if the asset reaches the stop price.

Stop losses are meant to decrease your potential losses, as you've probably guessed by this point. Although there is no established rule for where to place a stop loss, it is typically advised to place one between 2% and 5% of your transaction size. You should also aim to limit your per-trade losses to 1.5% or less of your total account size.

How a Stop Loss Order Works

Everybody has seen the floating ball valve used in water tanks to prevent overfilling or spillage. The floating ball valve automatically shuts off the water flow in the tanks when it reaches a certain level. Similar to a stop loss order, which automatically starts the W price reaches a specific level known as the stop price, is a similar tool.

Investors specify a certain price, referred to as the stop price, at which to trigger a stop loss order when they do so. The stop loss order turns into a market order if the stock price hits the stop price, which means that the stock will be sold at the best price—which may differ from the stop price specified in the order.

This helps to limit potential losses in the event of a downward trend in the stock's price. However, stop-loss orders do not guarantee that an order will be executed at the stop price and the actual price at which the order is executed may be different , especially during high market volatility.
