What is a native token? A native token is the base token of a blockchain and is often needed for transaction fees. Why Is a Native Token Important? Let's find out it.

What Is a Native Token?

Native tokens are blockchain's foundational digital currency. Every blockchain has a native coin that can be used for both payments and to reward miners and validators that add blocks to the blockchain. Because a blockchain's design only works with a specific token, these are often referred to as basic tokens or intrinsic tokens.

Examples Of Native Tokens

The native token of Cardano is ada and the Ethereum blockchain has ETH. LTC is also used on the Litecoin blockchain. These crypto coins are primarily designed to store value and work as a medium of exchange, similar to traditional currencies.

Why Is a Native Token Important?

Let's review the function of the Ethereum blockchain(PoW) and the function of Ether, its native currency, in order to understand the importance of a native token.

The Ethereum blockchain has helped shape several industries because it was designed to have smart contracts, used to develop decentralized applications (dApps). Ethereum is a critical component in decentralized finance (DeFi). Ether's value has increased due to the variety of its use case.

On the Ethereum blockchain, ether is primarily used as payment for transactions using the cryptocurrency as well as for transaction fees, also known as gas fees, and as collateral, which network validators stake to verify their eligibility.

Ether is also used as an authorized currency to support transactions in some decentralized applications based on Ethereum.

The fees paid for transactions to be completed are referred to as "gas fees" on the Ethereum blockchain. The payments are made in Gwei (1 ETH is equal to 1 billion Gwei). Transactions are approved and verified by validators, which are decentralized computers or nodes. To participate, nodes stake Ether, making them eligible.

Other blockchains, such as Solana and Algorand, include native currencies that enable smart contracts, much like how Ethereum's Ether gains value in this way.

What Is a Native Token? Hopefully, reading this article can help you to understand it better.
