Public EVM sidechains are designed for interoperability with Ethereum. Contracts are usually portable, and assets and data can be transferred across chains. Public sidechains are useful in many different contexts, including microtransactions, stable transactions, and application-specific transactions (NFT-based art, DAO voting, community currencies, etc.).
Ethereum sidechains are independent blockchain networks that run in parallel with the Ethereum mainchain. Sidechains are connected to the main chain through a two-way peg system, allowing assets to be exchanged between chains.

The potential of sidechains
Sidechains have enormous potential to expand the scope, scale and dynamics of blockchain technology, allowing previously isolated blockchain networks to be integrated into a common ecosystem. From a macro perspective, imagine a general blockchain network consisting of numerous blockchains, each with its own consensus mechanism , governance rules, and vision, but they are all independent of each other.
The ability to move assets and data between chains is an important aspect of the sidechain environment. Applications use sidechains for fast and cheap transactions, but the results of these transactions should be easily transferable across chains. This is sometimes called a two-way peg.
