The Lightning Network is an off-chain system designed to address the scalability problems of Bitcoin (BTC). Off-chain solutions, also known as layer-two solutions, give customers the ability to establish peer-to-peer payment channels.
Off-chain payment channels are typically used for smaller Bitcoin transactions, such as buying a cup of coffee. Transactions on a payment channel do not clutter the mainnet, allowing validators to concentrate on more important transactions.
Given that the blockchain can only validate a meager seven transactions per second, the Bitcoin network's emphasis on major transactions is essential (TPS). As a point of comparison, Visa can handle more than 47,000 transactions per second. The Lightning Network may enable Bitcoin's TPS to approach Visa's.
