Bitcoin is on the brink of reclaiming its all-time high (ATH) of $73,750, with the current price just 3% shy of this milestone. However, if the bullish momentum persists and Bitcoin surpasses the $74,300 mark, it could trigger the liquidation of approximately $1.45 billion in short positions. CoinGlass data indicates a notable imbalance between long and short leverage positions, with long positions outweighing short positions.
Shorting Bitcoin involves borrowing BTC and selling it in anticipation of a price decline. The objective for traders is to repurchase Bitcoin at a lower price, repay the loan, and capitalize on the price difference. Recent price movements have already led to the liquidation of approximately $328 million in leveraged positions over the past 24 hours, with $64 million from long positions and $264 million from short positions.
Bitcoin has exhibited sideways movement since the block subsidy halving in April, fluctuating between $60,000 and $65,000 over the past month. However, in the last few days, the price surged by over 5%, breaching the $70,000 threshold on Monday, May 20, and establishing a new multi-week high. Within 24 hours, the leading cryptocurrency was trading above $72,000, indicating a robust bullish momentum.
Several factors have been attributed to the recent bullish price action, including heightened investor confidence, diminished exchange supply, and increased inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) after a nearly two-week period of net outflows. On May 20 alone, spot Bitcoin ETF inflows totaled $235 million, with ARK Invest leading the way with the largest net inflows, followed by BlackRock. Even Grayscale ETF, which experienced weeks of outflows, recorded positive inflows for the fourth consecutive day.
Bitcoin's current upward trajectory has not only brought it closer to its ATH but has also propelled it to new highs in various countries, including Japan, Singapore, and Argentina. This surge in global demand underscores the growing prominence of Bitcoin as a valuable asset class.
