Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind and CEO of Inflection AI, predicts a revolutionary shift in the business world over the next five years. Speaking at the World Economic Forum, Suleyman shared his belief that artificial intelligence (AI) systems will be capable of inventing, producing, marketing, and selling products, essentially autonomously running product businesses until 2030. He envisions these capabilities becoming widely available, even possibly as open-source solutions, within the next five years or by the end of the decade.
While the concept of artificial general intelligence (AGI) is often discussed in the context of such capabilities, Suleyman prefers to focus on practical applications of AI technology, considering AGI a vague and unclear concept. He encourages researchers to emphasize real-world applications of AI.
Suleyman previously introduced his "Turing test" analogy to assess how closely an AI system resembles humans, particularly in its ability to autonomously and legally generate a million dollars. In his 2023 book, "The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the Greatest Dilemmas of the Twenty-First Century," he stressed the critical nature of the next five years and the need to establish limits on AI systems.
Advocating for government intervention in the AI field, Suleyman participated in a meeting with the U.S. Senate alongside technology leaders like Sam Altman (OpenAI CEO) and Mark Zuckerberg (Meta CEO). While no enforceable actions resulted from the meeting, Suleyman and other tech executives voluntarily committed to avoiding the intentional creation of harmful AI systems.
