Amazon and AI startup Anthropic have announced a new investment partnership aimed at advancing the development of high-performance foundational AI models.
As part of this collaboration, Amazon is committing a substantial $4 billion to support Anthropic's AI endeavors and will grant access to its Amazon Web Services Trainium and Inferentia chips.
In return, Anthropic is pledging to offer enhanced support for Amazon Bedrock. Bedrock serves as a platform for generating base AI models, allowing businesses to perform secure model customization and fine-tuning. Amazon's team will also leverage Bedrock to build upon Anthropic's existing models. As part of this deal, Amazon will acquire a minority stake in Anthropic, although this investment is not expected to disrupt the governance of the startup.
Anthropic, founded by former members of OpenAI, has been at the forefront of AI developments. They recently secured a $100 million investment from South Korean telecom giant SK Telecom. This partnership with SK Telecom focused on the creation of multilingual large language models for the telecom company's AI platform.
Additionally, Anthropic played a key role in establishing the "Frontier Model Forum" in collaboration with major tech companies like Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft. This initiative aims to self-regulate AI development within the industry.
Furthermore, Anthropic is actively involved in a US government-led effort to advance and regulate AI technologies, particularly in cybersecurity addressing challenges to safeguard critical infrastructure.
This latest partnership with Amazon demonstrates the ongoing interest and investment in AI technologies by major players in the tech industry.
