Hyperliquid has announced a forthcoming enhancement to its HIP-4 upgrade that will allow for the permissionless deployment of decentralized prediction markets. This development expands the platform's utility for readers and traders by enabling open access to event-based outcome contracts.
Key Takeaways
• Hyperliquid is transitioning from validator-only to permissionless prediction market deployment.
• Deployers are required to stake 500,000 HYPE tokens, valued at approximately $30,400,000, to create new markets.
• Staked assets are subject to a six-month lockup period and potential slashing by validators for poor market definitions or incorrect settlements.
• Deployers can earn up to 50% of the trading fees generated by their respective markets.
• The feature will launch on testnet before expanding to the mainnet, where validator-controlled markets will become rare.
Permissionless Access
Once the enhancement is live, any user will be able to offer a prediction market on the platform, moving beyond the current system where markets are exclusively under the authority of validators. While the platform will continue to support validator-controlled markets, Hyperliquid intends for these to be rare, with an ideal target of fewer than 10 per year. To maintain ecosystem health, these markets must utilize standard templates approved through validator voting.
Staking Requirement
To incentivize high-quality deployments, the protocol requires that any developer wishing to launch a market must stake 500,000 HYPE tokens. Based on current market valuations, this stake is worth approximately $30,400,000. These tokens are locked for a duration of six months to ensure deployer commitment to the platform.
Slashable Assets
The stake functions as a security deposit that can be confiscated through a process known as slashing. Validators may vote to slash these 500,000 HYPE tokens if they determine a market is poorly defined, settled incorrectly, or remains unsettled for more than one week. This mechanism is designed to deter the creation of malicious or low-quality instruments on the exchange.
Revenue Sharing
To reward the effort involved in managing these instruments, deployers are entitled to earn up to 50% of the revenue generated from trading fees within their markets. The protocol notes that specific configuration options for this revenue share will be introduced in a future update following the initial rollout. Each deployer is initially limited to 100 outcome slots, though the protocol plans to implement an auction system later to allow for expanded capacity.
Rollout Plan
The permissionless deployment feature will first be made available on the testnet to allow for platform testing and rule refinement. Following successful testnet operations, the feature will be deployed to the mainnet in a subsequent network upgrade. Hyperliquid emphasizes that this progression is essential for expanding on-chain applications, as the potential range of event-based markets is significantly larger than traditional spot or perpetual assets.
