Apple has reportedly been actively recruiting experts from Google in an effort to build its own team specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. According to a report from the Financial Times on April 30, Apple has embarked on a "hiring spree" over the past year, attracting "dozens" of such experts, with approximately 36 of them being recruited from Google since 2018.
In addition to bolstering its talent pool, Apple has also made strategic acquisitions in the field of artificial intelligence. The company acquired two local AI startups in Zurich, Switzerland, leading to the establishment of a discreet research facility known as the "Vision Laboratory." This laboratory, staffed by employees from Zurich, has been instrumental in Apple's exploration of advanced AI technologies, such as those powering rival services like OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Despite its significant investments in AI, Apple's activities in this realm have largely flown under the radar. The Vision Laboratory in Zurich, for instance, has been described as inconspicuous, with many local residents unaware of Apple's presence in the area.
Apple's increased focus on artificial intelligence comes at a time when other tech giants, including Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and OpenAI, have been aggressively investing in and advancing large-scale language models. While Apple has maintained a relatively low profile in this regard, recent developments indicate a shift in its approach.
Apple has taken steps to integrate generative AI into its mobile devices, signaling a commitment to leveraging AI technology within its ecosystem. CEO Tim Cook confirmed earlier in 2024 that generative AI software features would be introduced to iOS and other Apple platforms in the near future. Reports also suggest that Apple is engaged in discussions with both OpenAI and Google regarding the integration of generative AI technology on iOS, reflecting the company's evolving focus on artificial intelligence.
