Ark Invest, the second-largest shareholder of the cryptocurrency trading platform Coinbase, has recently divested nearly $69 million worth of COIN shares. This move coincides with a significant surge in the value of Bitcoin, which reached over $73,000, marking a new all-time high for the cryptocurrency.
The spike in Bitcoin's value came after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved nearly a dozen spot Bitcoin ETF applications in January 2024. Ark Invest's founder and CEO, Cathie Wood, has previously expressed optimism about Bitcoin, suggesting that it could potentially be valued at over $1.5 million by 2030. She noted that achieving this milestone before the SEC's approval was significant, indicating a hastening of the timeline for Bitcoin's ascent.
The anticipation among cryptocurrency enthusiasts is that the SEC's approval could pave the way for broader adoption of Bitcoin nationwide. Traditional financial institutions are also exploring opportunities in the cryptocurrency space, further signaling its growing legitimacy. Wood reiterated her bullish stance on Bitcoin, emphasizing expectations for increased institutional participation and a consequent surge in its value.
However, FDIC Vice Chairman Travis Hill criticized the SEC's accounting bulletin, SAB 121, which requires banks to list custody of digital assets on their balance sheets. This requirement limits banks' ability to participate fully in the digital asset ecosystem, as it subjects them to stringent capital and liquidity requirements. Hill argued that the treatment of digital assets under SAB 121 is different from traditional assets held in custody, posing challenges for banks to engage in such activities.
The House Financial Services Committee has passed a bill aimed at overturning SAB 121, but it awaits a vote in the House. This legislative development underscores the ongoing debate surrounding regulatory frameworks for digital assets and the efforts to provide clarity and facilitate innovation in the cryptocurrency industry.
