Australian authorities are set to enforce stringent measures mandating local companies to openly report any ransomware cyberattacks targeting their businesses. The country faced a significant economic setback in 2021, losing an estimated $2.59 billion due to cybercrime.
As part of the forthcoming National Cyber Security Strategy slated for release in November, businesses will be compelled to adhere to a mandatory reporting system, requiring them to notify the government regarding ransomware cyberattacks, according to The Australian’s report on November 13. Although non-compliance won't result in fines, companies failing to fulfill this obligation will be exposed.
Despite the mandatory reporting, businesses will retain the ability to pay ransoms, a practice discouraged by the new national cybersecurity coordinator, Air Marshal Darren Goldie. Australia recently joined around 40 other nations in pledging not to concede to ransomware demands directed at government entities. The government aims to collaborate with the business community in formulating this mandatory framework. Home Affairs and Cyber Security Minister Clare O'Neill underscored the government's plans to establish a ransomware playbook, offering comprehensive guidance for businesses and citizens on preparing for, handling, and recovering from ransom demands.
Ransomware attacks continue to pose a prevalent threat in the digital landscape. In a bid to combat ransomware crimes, the U.S. Department of Justice announced its intent to double the size of its cryptocurrency crime team in July, focusing specifically on addressing ransomware incidents.
Chainalysis reported that wallets implicated in ransomware attacks often resort to crypto mining pools to launder funds obtained through exploitations. According to the research firm, there has been an uptick in the value transferred from ransomware wallets to mining pools. As an example, Chainalysis highlighted an exchange wallet address that received $158.3 million from ransomware addresses since 2018.
