Sky Mavis, the company behind the popular blockchain game Axie Infinity, has revealed that four game studios will build and publish games on top of the Ronin Network, inspiring the creation of its own native gaming ecosystem.
In an announcement sent to Cointelegraph, Sky Mavis highlighted that they have partnered with four game studios: Directive Games, Tribes, Bali Games, and Bowled.io. In addition, the team also announced that the Ronin Blockchain has switched to the Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism. Trung Nguyen, co-founder and CEO of Sky Mavis, explained: “By upgrading to DPoS, we are poised to open up our infrastructure and technology to the wider Web3 world. We believe this is the way to create more community-focused, more valuable, and most importantly, more fun games.”
Kathleen Osgood, head of business development at Sky Mavis, told Cointelegraph that his team reviewed 250 game studios before deciding on which ones to announce. According to Osgood, it picks studios from various niches in the gaming space to achieve its goal of "getting as many people as possible into the ecosystem." By partnering with other teams with a history of Web2 user acquisition, the creators of Axie Infinity will be able to make blockchain gaming accessible to the masses and be a catalyst for more Web3 adoption.
Despite the crypto winter, many still believe more traditional gaming companies will jump into the non-fungible token (NFT) and blockchain gaming space. On January 12, Web3 executives discussed the potential for mainstream game companies to join, sharing their views on NFT game models, such as playing for money and mobile for money.
