Cryptocurrency exchange Bitget is dedicating $10 million to support female-led startups in the Web3 and blockchain sectors. Announced on January 16, this initiative includes the launch of an incubation program specifically designed for female entrepreneurs. Additionally, Bitget will host pitch competitions to showcase and support startups founded by women. This move underscores the exchange's commitment to fostering diversity and empowering women in the rapidly evolving blockchain industry.
In a bid to further champion gender diversity within the blockchain space, Bitget plans to inaugurate the Blockchain4Her program. This initiative will involve industry leaders who will serve as ambassadors, advocating for and promoting a more inclusive environment. These ambassadors will engage in various activities to drive positive change and support the integration of more women into the blockchain sector.
Parallel to this effort, Bitget announced a significant investment in the future generation of blockchain enthusiasts. On May 4, 2023, they unveiled a $10 million program called “Blockchain4Youth.” This initiative is aimed at nurturing young talent, offering educational courses through Bitget Academy, and organizing university lectures focused on Web3. The program also includes incubating innovative projects from young entrepreneurs and hosting hackathons specifically for individuals under the age of 30, to spotlight emerging leaders in the field.
Bitget's focus on gender disparity in the blockchain industry is further highlighted by a report they released on January 11, detailing the state of Web3 venture capital (VC) funding by gender. The report revealed a concerning statistic: less than 7% of venture capital funding in this space is allocated to female-led startups. These startups are defined as series-stage companies where women comprise at least 50% of the executive team.
The report further illustrates the gender gap in blockchain funding. As of the third quarter of 2023, only 8.2% of funding was directed towards female-led blockchain startups, a figure starkly lower than the 20.3% average for startups across all industries. This data underscores the necessity for comprehensive measures to enhance inclusivity and accessibility for women in the blockchain field, a goal that Bitget's initiatives aim to achieve.
