BlackRock, a global investment giant managing $10 trillion in assets, has expressed its belief that artificial intelligence (AI) is a "massive force" capable of generating impressive returns for investors, especially in today's "unusual" markets. In their mid-year outlook report, the BlackRock Investment Institute outlined their thesis on increasing investments in AI, identifying disruptive themes that could lead to rapid growth in the industry in the coming years. The report highlights the concentration of gains in the S&P 500 among a few technology stocks, making AI investment an attractive option to capitalize on this trend.
For BlackRock's investment team, the primary advantage of AI is automation, which can lead to significant cost savings and boosted profit margins, especially for companies with high staff costs and tasks that can be easily automated. Additionally, AI-powered tools can help companies leverage dormant information to create innovative new models, benefiting businesses with proprietary data. The report also identifies other drivers of growth, such as the global push for a low-carbon economy, population aging, and advancements in the financial system.
The interest in AI extends beyond BlackRock, as other industry players are recognizing its potential. Matt Huang, CEO of cryptocurrency investment firm Paradigm, commented on the rapid developments in AI and its compelling prospects. Meanwhile, macroeconomics commentator Finance lot attributes the boom in AI to the demand for specific AI computing, as evidenced by the soaring stock of GPU maker Nvidia. However, he also cautions that potential US export restrictions on these chips could impact stock prices of AI-related companies.
Despite their focus on AI, BlackRock has recently turned its attention to bitcoin, filing for a spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) with the SEC. If approved, it would be the first spot bitcoin trust product to receive regulatory clearance. Analysts give BlackRock a 50 percent chance of approval for the ETF application. The investment firm's exploration of both AI and bitcoin indicates its willingness to explore innovative technologies and opportunities in the ever-evolving financial landscape.
