Even after almost a day, an unidentified group is still using Algorand Foundation CEO Staci Warden’s X account, ridiculing users and the platform itself. The unnamed hacker remained active on the social media platform, using the compromised account to post messages containing racial slurs and insults aimed at Warden, while also engaging with X users. The hacker even changed Warden’s profile information, falsely claiming to have taken a significant amount of money from clients under the guise of a hack and making personal attacks. Despite the offensive activity, some X users appeared to find amusement in the situation, expressing a preference for the hacker's posts over Warden's.
The extent of X's response to the security breach is unclear. Algorand Chief Technology Officer John Woods issued a statement at 8:10 pm UTC on January 26, indicating that the company was still working to regain control of Warden's account. However, he emphasized that there had been no compromise of Algorand systems or accounts. Notably, there have been instances of high-profile X accounts being temporarily taken over before, as seen with the SEC account on January 9. During that incident, hackers published false news claiming that the SEC had approved a Bitcoin Exchange Traded Fund (ETF). The SEC later reported that the hack resulted from a SIM-swapping attack.
