Canadian Member of Parliament (MP) Joël Lightbound marked the 15th anniversary of the Bitcoin white paper by expressing gratitude to its mysterious creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, in a speech to the Canadian Parliament. During his address, Lightbound disclosed that he owns Bitcoin but refrained from encouraging others to buy it, instead advocating for a deeper understanding of the leading cryptocurrency. He emphasized that Bitcoin emerged in a period of financial turmoil and has since evolved into an empowering tool for the underbanked and individuals living under oppressive regimes.
Lightbound acknowledged that Bitcoin has had a substantial impact, helping numerous families avert the tragedy of currency devaluation. He characterized it as a symbol of genuine progress. He thanked Satoshi Nakamoto for his creation and wished a happy 15th anniversary to the Bitcoin white paper. In his speech, Lightbound quoted two notable figures, including former Twitter CEO and Bitcoin proponent Jack Dorsey. He also cited a 2019 statement by Gary Gensler, who is currently the Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which was somewhat surprising due to Gensler's recent regulatory stance on cryptocurrencies.
In the 2019 quote, Gensler opined that projects associated with Satoshi Nakamoto's creations could have a transformative effect in various ways. He stressed the value of reducing verification and network costs, aiming to decrease economic rents and data privacy expenses while fostering economic inclusion. Although Gensler's current role as SEC Chairman has seen him adopt a stricter regulatory approach toward cryptocurrencies, his prior remarks offer a more favorable perspective on their potential benefits. The crypto community had initially held high hopes for Gensler's appointment given his background in teaching about cryptocurrencies, but his tenure as SEC Chairman has raised concerns and generated disappointment within the crypto community.
