The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is reportedly in the process of developing its own AI bot similar to ChatGPT, with plans to deploy it for investigative purposes, according to Bloomberg.
The CIA aims to provide its analysts with advanced artificial intelligence tools to enhance their capabilities in gathering open source intelligence. This involves sifting through publicly available information to identify leads for investigations.
Officials from the agency have indicated that the tool is set to be rolled out soon. Randy Nixon, the CIA's director of open source enterprises, explained that their approach to gathering public data has evolved over time, from relying on newspapers and radio to newspapers and television, and so on. This development aims to keep pace with the changing landscape.
The motivation behind this initiative is to address criticisms that the CIA's current methods for processing publicly available data are slow. The new tool is expected to offer features such as the ability to view the original source of information and engage in chat interactions.
Nixon described the tool's capabilities, stating that users can take it a step further by initiating a chat and querying the machine for answers, with those responses also being sourced from available information.
This move by the CIA aligns with the broader trend of government agencies leveraging artificial intelligence tools for various purposes. Recently, US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler confirmed the SEC's use of AI tools to monitor the financial industry for signs of fraud and manipulation. Gensler highlighted the benefits of AI in market surveillance, disclosure reviews, examinations, enforcement, and economic analysis in a speech delivered in July.
The integration of AI into intelligence and regulatory agencies reflects the increasing role of technology in enhancing their capabilities for gathering and analyzing data in today's digital age.
