Simon Callaghan, the newly appointed CEO of Blockchain Australia, is urging Australian banks, the government, and the crypto industry to collaborate in combating the increasing number of cryptocurrency scams. Speaking at Australia Blockchain Week in Melbourne on June 30. C Allaghan announced that the association would focus on preventing cryptocurrency scams and protecting consumers. He emphasized the need to work with the banking industry and the government to achieve these goals.
Callaghan highlighted that many scams originate from social media or telecom channels and emphasized the importance of police intervention from the first contact. He stated that cryptocurrency can either serve as an exit point in the scam life cycle or be involved as a secondary component further up the chain. While global cooperation in combating cryptocurrency scams has been limited thus far, Callaghan expressed hope that Australia could lead the way and set an example for other jurisdictions.
Cryptocurrency-related scams have gained attention in Australia recently. The country's two largest banks have implemented restrictions or outright bans on certain payments to cryptocurrency exchanges due to the increasing threat of fraud. The Australian government has also took an interest in addressing the issue by establishing a national anti-fraud center on July 1. operated by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The center aims to pool expertise and resources to prevent scammers from targeting Australians and raise awareness among consumers on how to avoid scams. Assistant Treasury Secretary Trevor Power stated that cryptocurrency-related scams would be a major focus for the center.
Blockchain Australia, the leading industry body for blockchain in the country, plans to leverage scam data collected from cryptocurrency exchanges to share best practices in preventing scams and fraud. The association represents 111 blockchain companies operating in Australia. By collaborating with banks, the government, and the crypto industry, Blockchain Australia aims to take a proactive stance against cryptocurrency scams and protect consumers in the country.
