Arkansas Representative French Hill, who currently chairs the U.S. House Subcommittee on Digital Assets, Financial Technology, and Inclusive Financial Services, is eyeing a leadership role encompassing the entire committee following the departure of Patrick McHenry. According to reports from Punchbowl News on March 17, Hill is among the contenders to assume the chairmanship of the entire Financial Services Committee, starting in January 2025, coinciding with the conclusion of McHenry's term. McHenry had announced in December 2023 that he would not seek re-election after two decades in power.
Having chaired the Digital Assets Subcommittee since its establishment in January 2023, Hill also holds the position of vice chair of the House Committee of the Whole. Under the leadership of Hill and McHenry, the committee has conducted hearings addressing various cryptocurrency-related issues, including concerns about the financing of terrorism and money laundering.
Brooke Nethercott, the communications director for Rep. Hill, that Hill has been exploring the possibility of seeking the House Financial Services Chair position. Based on discussions with colleagues and Hill's extensive four-decade experience in both the public and private financial services sectors, he has decided to pursue the committee chairmanship.
The outcome of leadership positions within the House committee will hinge on whether Republican lawmakers can maintain their majority after the U.S. 2024 election. With control of the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the presidency all in contention between Democratic and Republican lawmakers, the future composition of leadership roles remains uncertain. In a January 2024 interview, Hill expressed his hopes for the passage of some cryptocurrency-related bills through the full committee by the year's end.
