A coalition of prominent cryptocurrency firms, advocacy organizations, and tech companies, spearheaded by Coinbase, has united in an effort to combat prevalent scams within the industry. This collaborative initiative, dubbed "Tech Against Scam," brings together key players such as Kraken, Gemini, Ripple Labs, Meta, the Global Anti-Fraud Organization (GASO), and dating app company Match.
The primary objective of Tech Against Scam is to raise awareness and promote safety by educating the public about the various fraudulent schemes commonly encountered in the cryptocurrency space. Among the specific scams targeted for mitigation is the notorious "pig slaughter" tactic, recognized for its insidious nature and detrimental impact on victims.
"Pig slaughter" scams entail perpetrators establishing trust and rapport with individuals over an extended period, often leveraging platforms like dating apps to initiate contact. Through the guise of romance or enticing business opportunities, scammers gradually manipulate victims before absconding with their funds.
It is emphasized that these fraudulent practices are not exclusive to cryptocurrency but have existed long before the advent of digital technology. Nonetheless, recent data highlights the significant financial toll inflicted by such scams, with Chainalysis reporting an estimated $5.9 billion lost to crypto-related scams in 2022 alone.
In a notable development, U.S. authorities have taken legal action against individuals implicated in a cryptocurrency-focused hog slaughter scam. Zhang Yicheng and Li Daren were apprehended in April on charges related to a scheme that allegedly siphoned $73 million from victims.
The operation involved the creation of numerous shell companies to conceal illicit activities, with stolen funds ultimately routed through a complex network of bank accounts. Facing charges of money laundering, both suspects could potentially face severe penalties, including up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
