Roger Ver, an early Bitcoin investor and advocate for Bitcoin Cash, has been arrested in the United States on charges of tax evasion, sparking controversy within the cryptocurrency community.
While some individuals within the community criticized Ver's arrest, suggesting that his later stance against Bitcoin justified his actions, others saw it as a warranted move. Notably, longtime Bitcoin supporter Dan Held applauded Ver's arrest, labeling him as a detriment to the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Speculation arose among crypto-focused individuals, with some suggesting that Ver's arrest could be linked to his involvement in various investigations involving entities like Binance, Genesis, and Three Arrows Capital.
Despite renouncing his U.S. citizenship in 2014 and becoming a Japanese citizen, Ver was apprehended in Spain on April 30 on charges brought by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), including mail fraud, tax evasion, and filing false tax returns.
The DOJ alleges that Ver evaded taxes amounting to $48 million from Bitcoin and cryptocurrency sales in 2017. Facing extradition to the United States, Ver's arrest drew condemnation from many cryptocurrency veterans, who viewed it as an overreach by U.S. law enforcement agencies.
Critics highlighted Ver's compliance with Japanese tax laws and questioned the timing of the charges, noting that he had legally left the United States nearly a decade ago. Paul Sztorc, CEO of LayerTwo Labs, underscored the fact that Ver had paid taxes in both Japan and the United States for nine years before his arrest in Spain, suggesting a lack of consent by the governed in the government's actions.
Further dissent against Ver's indictment came from figures like Kim Dotcom, who viewed it as a politically motivated attack rather than a genuine pursuit of justice. Dotcom emphasized Ver's support for causes like free press and opposition to foreign and domestic policies, framing the charges as part of a broader agenda against dissenting voices.
Jane Adams, a 2024 U.S. House candidate and Bitcoin supporter, said Ver’s arrest was a blatant attack on dissent. She added that the U.S. government was pursuing Weir out of vindictiveness because he advocated freedom of the press and opposed U.S. "imperialism."
Some others have speculated that Ver’s arrest is part of a larger U.S. government targeting cryptocurrency. Bitcoin supporter DavidShares on X says the United States is actively cracking down on cryptocurrencies. In a separate article, he said that U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration is trying to push for a raft of anti-cryptocurrency enforcement and regulations ahead of the upcoming presidential election in November.
