The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has opened new frontiers for human creativity and expression. However, it has also introduced challenges, notably in the realm of digital identity and the rising prevalence of deepfake-based fraud.
According to Sumsub data, fraud cases attributed to deepfakes have significantly increased, more than doubling from 2022 to the first quarter of 2023, with the proportion escalating from 0.2% to 2.6% in the United States alone.
In recent incidents, prominent figures like actors Tom Hanks and Jennifer Aniston, alongside YouTuber Mr. Beast, faced public allegations of leveraging AI-generated deepfakes to promote various products.
To combat these issues, Hollo.AI, headquartered in California, unveiled its platform on November 16. The platform empowers users to establish and assert control over their AI identities or "personas" while offering customized chatbots for both monetization and authentication of their AI activities. Hollo.AI emphasizes the ethical utilization of AI, leveraging blockchain technology for verification. Rex Wong, the CEO, explained that the platform's verified AI registry grants creators and celebrities "sovereign ownership" over their AI identities, publicly recorded on the blockchain.
Wong elaborated on the significance, stating that a verified identity, represented by a blue checkmark, provides users with authority over the usage of their identity, enabling them to generate income through authorized permissions. The platform functions akin to identity theft protection for digital personas, offering monitoring services to prevent unauthorized use and mitigate the proliferation and impact of deepfakes.
Moreover, Hollo.AI is committed to assisting users in rectifying fraudulent incidents following the detection of unauthorized usage. Wong highlighted the paramount importance of empowering users in an era where digital identities can easily be replicated and exploited without authorization.
Upon users creating an AI "digital twin" on the platform, the system continuously learns and refines the identity based on the social connections provided by the user, thereby enhancing the accuracy of the digital identity.
While Hollo.AI endeavors to address issues of transparency and ethical AI use, similar discussions on these subjects are underway in various institutions and platforms. Notably, YouTube recently revised its Community Guidelines to incorporate greater AI transparency measures. Concurrently, the entertainment industry union SAG-AFTRA is engaged in negotiations with major Hollywood studios concerning the utilization of AI-generated "digital twins" for actors, a pivotal topic during their 118-day negotiation period.
