KB Kookmin Taps JPMorgan’s Kinexys as South Korea’s Largest Bank Pushes Instant Dollar Payments

KB Kookmin Bank, South Korea’s largest lender by assets, will launch a corporate cross-border payment service in August built on Kinexys, JPMorgan’s permissioned blockchain platform. The move makes KB Kookmin the first South Korean financial institution to settle commercial dollar payments on the network.

KB Kookmin Bank, a unit of KB Financial Group, will roll out a new corporate remittance service in August 2026 for import and export businesses that need to move U.S. dollars across borders. The service covers USD transfers to 10 countries, including the United States, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, India, Thailand, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and South Africa, plus domestic transfers within South Korea.

KB Financial Group carries $552.76 billion in total assets, making it South Korea’s largest financial institution by that measure and the 28th-largest bank in the Asia-Pacific region. The development marks one of the platform’s most significant Northeast Asian commercial deployments to date, and it follows a string of regional banks adopting JPMorgan’s blockchain rails over the past year.

Kinexys, JPMorgan’s blockchain-based institutional payments platform formerly known as Onyx, allows corporate clients to move funds, exchange currencies and manage liquidity using tokenized bank deposits on a permissioned network operated by the bank. Unlike public blockchains such as Ethereum or Solana, Kinexys involves no public crypto tokens; transactions instead move as digitized representations of existing bank deposits, integrated with legacy infrastructure like SWIFT rather than replacing it outright.

To date, the platform has processed more than $4 trillion in cumulative transaction volume since launch, with average daily activity now exceeding $7 billion. The network originally supported the U.S. dollar, euro and British pound before adding the Australian dollar, Hong Kong dollar, Japanese yen, Chinese renminbi and Singapore dollar.

Corporate clients already on the platform include Payoneer, which uses Kinexys for Australian dollar settlement, and JERA Global Markets, the trading arm of a major Japanese energy company, for yen-denominated accounts.

KB Kookmin is not limiting its blockchain exposure to Kinexys alone, as the bank is also participating in a government-led South Korean deposit-token payments initiative announced on July 23, 2026, part of the Bank of Korea’s broader Project Hangang push toward a two-tier digital won.

It has separately been involved in blockchain-based digital bond issuance and stablecoin pilots this year, positioning it as one of the more active traditional lenders experimenting with tokenized finance in the region.
