Bitfinex, a cryptocurrency exchange, announced on July 6 that it had received $312,219.71 in cash and $6.917 in Bitcoin Cash from the US Department of Homeland Security in cooperation with US Customs and Border Protection. The funds were seized as part of Bitfin ex's ongoing efforts to recover assets stolen from the exchange in August 2016. The US government has been making progress in prosecuting individuals involved in the security breach and seizing associated funds. The recovered assets will be returned proportionally to the victims of the 2016 Bitfinex hack .
Following the security breach in 2016, Bitfinex issued Recovery Rights Tokens (RRT) with a face value of $1 each. These tokens will be redeemed with the recovered assets, and the remaining funds will be distributed to token holders of Bitfinex's native token, Unus Sed Leo. Currently, there are 30 million RRTs in circulation. The process of recovering funds from the hack is still ongoing.
The security breach in 2016 resulted in the loss of Bitcoins from 119,576 Bitfinex customers, valued at approximately $70 million at the time, which is now worth $3.7 billion. In February 2022, the US Department of Justice arrested Ilya Lichtenstein and h is wife, Heather Morgan , on charges of conspiring to launder cryptocurrency related to the hack. Law enforcement agents seized over 94,000 BTC from the suspects after obtaining a search warrant that allowed access to documents containing private keys to the wallets. Efforts to recover the stolen funds are continuing.
