Nearly two and a half years after becoming the first country to adopt Bitcoin (BTC) as legal tender, El Salvador has won an international award for its ambitious and environmentally friendly Bitcoin City, which will be built on the bottom of a volcano.
Out of 705 proposals from 56 countries, the government of El Salvador's Bitcoin City project has been recognized by the jury of global design platform LOOP, Argentine media outlet Noticias de Bariloche (NDB) reported on Jan. 25. Reportedly, the LOOP Design Awards are a unique opportunity to gain public recognition by recognizing the most outstanding projects in the fields of architecture and interior design from the perspective of a jury of more than 25 experts.
The urban project, to be built in southeastern El Salvador, was created by Mexican architect Fernando Romero and his firm Enterprise Free, who describe the project as "an efficient and sustainable city based on its innovative model of a smart metropolis."
In fact, once built, Bitcoin City will generate its own clean energy from two nearby volcanoes, Tecapa and Conchagua. Specifically, it will be geothermally powered by Tecapa Volcano and will then be entirely dependent on the much closer Conchagua Volcano.
