Elon Musk, the owner of the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, now called X, announced on August 18 that he plans to eliminate the option to block users on the app. This statement was prompted by a post from the "Tesla Owners Silicon Valley" account, questioning why users don't utilize the "mute" feature instead of blocking.
The reaction from other users was swift, and a majority of comments on the initial post seemed to highlight why the blocking feature is essential to them. Users pointed out that blocking is a two-way function, providing them with a way to avoid unwanted interactions and content.
This isn't the first time Musk has mentioned the idea. On June 7, he shared similar thoughts in response to a post by self-proclaimed journalist Andy Ngo. Some users suspect Musk might be considering the removal of the blocking feature due to its impact on subscribers of the platform's "blue" service. This subscription service was introduced to replace the app's previous authentication system.
While many users expressed concerns about the potential increase in harassment without the blocking feature, the cryptocurrency community specifically worried about a surge in scam accounts, spam, and bots remaining on the platform unchecked.
