The team behind the Bitcoin Ordinals protocol has introduced a non-profit organization named the Open Ordinals Institute. This California-based nonprofit entity is dedicated to fostering the development of Bitcoin non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and aims to support the Ordinals pro tocol by providing funding to its core developers. The protocol's anonymous lead maintainer, known as Raph, will be one of the benefits of this support.
The newly established non-profit will have a board composed of four team members. Alongside Raph, the board will include Erin Redwing, a host of a Bitcoin-focused podcast, an anonymous Ordinals developer named Ordinally, and Kathy Rodarmor (also known as Casey Rodarmor), the creator of the Ordinals protocol. The Ordinals protocol was launched by Rodarmor in January and quickly gained popularity within the cryptocurrency community. It allows users to record various assets, including NFTs and bitcoin-based cryptocurrencies, on the Bitcoin blockchain.
In May, Rodarmor stepped down from his position as the lead maintainer of the protocol and passed on this role to Raph. On August 1, the total count of Bitcoin serial number inscriptions surpassed 21 million, marking a significant milestone for the Bitcoin network's users. The team also launched the official website of the organization, Ordinals.org, which provides a platform for users to donate and stay updated on the project's development.
