Italian trading card, comics, and collectibles company Panini has unveiled a new series of digital Donruss Elite card sets, showcasing 100 World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Superstars on the Panini blockchain. The lineup boasts a selection of WWE's most prominent figures, including John Cena, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Roman Reigns, Finn Bálor, Damian Priest, Rhea Ripley, Undertaker, Chyna, Chelsea Green, and Kiana James.
According to a joint press release from Panini and WWE, purchasers of digital packs will gain access to limited-edition digital assets and will have the opportunity to participate in collectors’ events and contests. The release also mentions exciting collecting challenges where collectors can vie for cards not featured in the set and digital crafting events enabling the transformation of common cards into exclusive numbered cards.
While this venture marks Panini's latest move into digital collectibles, WWE has been exploring non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for several years. In 2021, the company, alongside John Cena, introduced a series of NFTs featuring the iconic wrestler and actor. The past year has seen a surge of interest in NFTs and digital collectibles within the wrestling community, with competitors like All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and Impact! Wrestling also launching their own NFTs in 2023.
Despite being the leading name in sports entertainment, WWE faces stiff competition, with rivals AEW and Impact! Wrestling making strides in the NFT space. WWE operates its own NFT marketplace, "Moonsault," built on Eluv.io's Content Fabric blockchain. However, sales on this platform have reportedly been sluggish in 2023, prompting the company to explore new avenues such as the Donruss Elite blockchain cards developed in collaboration with Panini.
Jason Howarth, Panini's Senior Vice President of Marketing and Athlete Relations, expressed optimism about the partnership with WWE, highlighting the wrestling giant's fervent fanbase and rich history, which aligns well with the expectations of the blockchain collectibles community. As both companies navigate this evolving landscape, their success in the digital collectibles market remains to be seen.
