On the Ropsten testnet, the Merge went through without a hitch. In late Q3 or early Q4 2022, the ultimate merger will occur. Ethereum developers will focus on sharding after the switch to the proof-of-stake algorithm.
With the Merge going successfully on the Ropsten testnet yesterday, the Ethereum network has achieved yet another significant milestone. Ropsten is one of the final testnets to experience the Beacon chain merging, so the move prepares the network for a full switch to proof-of-stake.
The cryptocurrency community celebrated the news that Ropsten would undergo the Merge after Ethereum originally announced it earlier in the week. Ethereum developer has already begun processing transactions. Despite having fewer data and more memes, the crypto community was just as happy.
The beacon chain, which is a proof-of-stake chain, merges with Ropsten's prior proof-of-work chain as a result of the merge. This merge, like merges with other testnets, is intended to see if the upgrade works without any hiccups. All of these actions are taken to guarantee a smooth merge with the mainnet when it eventually occurs.
The merging with the Ethereum mainnet has not yet had a date assigned. It has been confirmed to take place later this year, and if it goes as well as past mergers, Ethereum will have successfully carried out one of its largest improvements.
The transition efforts made by Ethereum thus far are really positive. Over the past several months, there has been a steady, significant increase in ETH staking. Over 10% of the available supply, or 13.4 million ETH, are currently held as stakes.
According to Vitalik Buterin, the final Merge will occur in late Q3 or early Q4 2022. However, if there are no problems, it can occur as early as August.
Even more encouraging improvements have taken place since the Merge. Although decentralization is its main aim, sharding's scaling mechanism adheres to it and will genuinely help all Ethereum users. The network is developing in a methodical, steady manner, which has shown to be highly successful thus far.
