On September 15th, Ethereum developers introduced a new testnet named "Holešky." This test network is primarily designated for staking, infrastructure development, and protocol testing, while Sepolia remains the primary choice for application development on Ethereum.
Holešky's initial supply of testnet ether, known as HETH, will be distributed to validators upon its launch, amounting to ten times the total Ethereum supply on the mainnet. Developers are comfortable with this sizable supply because it's common for development networks to utilize such amounts.
Previously, Goerli served as Ethereum's testnet for testing new staking mechanisms, infrastructure, and protocol developments. However, complaints arose in October as Goerli's ETH supply was insufficient to meet the testing demands effectively. Holešky's substantial initial supply is expected to alleviate this issue.
Since Sepolia's launch in 2021, Ethereum's development team has been encouraging application developers to transition from Goerli to Sepolia, leaving only protocol developers on the old network until Holešky's deployment. The plan is to phase out Goerli entirely by January 2024, with maintenance continuing for an additional year before complete shutdown, as stated in Ethereum's documentation.
Holešky is poised to play a crucial role as Ethereum developers embark on an ambitious roadmap. Their objectives include implementing various features like shard chains, beacon chains, and other enhancements aimed at reducing transaction fees. Additionally, they plan to incorporate features like Verkle trees designed to lower the operational costs associated with running a node. Each of these features will undergo rigorous testing on the Holešky testnet before being deployed on the Ethereum mainnet.
