The Uniswap Foundation, responsible for the decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol Uniswap, has disclosed the release date for version 4 (v4) of the protocol, coinciding with Ethereum's upcoming Dencun upgrade. In a recent announcement on X, the foundation outlined its roadmap, detailing newly initiated initiatives. Emphasizing a current "code freeze" phase, the organization highlighted ongoing activities including core code finalization, rigorous testing, gas optimization, security enhancements, and peripheral adjustments.
Following the completion of these crucial stages, the Uniswap Foundation plans to subject v4's code to extensive scrutiny, leveraging auditing firms and community audit competitions. The objective is to ensure that Uniswap v4 emerges as the most thoroughly vetted code ever deployed on the Ethereum blockchain. Once the final tweaks are made by the foundation's team, the decentralized exchange will transition to the testnet phase. According to the Uniswap Foundation's projections, the third quarter of 2024 is targeted for the deployment of Uniswap v4 onto the Ethereum mainnet. However, this timeline remains tentative, contingent upon the progress of Ethereum's impending Dencun upgrade.
As previously reported by Cointelegraph, Ethereum's Dencun upgrade commenced its activation process on the Goerli testnet on January 17. This upgrade introduces various Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), notably EIP-4844, facilitating proto-danksharding to alleviate Layer 2 transaction fees. Despite encountering a four-hour delay in its deployment to the Goerli testnet, the upgrade proceeded successfully to the Sepolia testnet on January 31, marking the second phase of testing.
Following the completion of testing on the Sepolia testnet, the Dencun upgrade underwent its third phase on the Holesky testnet, starting from February 7. Ethereum developer Tim Beiko announced the finalization of the upgrade deployment to the mainnet, scheduled for "slot 8626176" on March 13, 2024, at 1:55:35 PM UTC. This decision was reached during a conference call among Ethereum developers on February 8, following the successful completion of testing on the Holesky testnet, as highlighted by blockchain research firm Nethermind.
