Concerns have arisen over a potential multi-million dollar breach following an unusually large outflow of funds from a multi-chain MPC bridge platform. On July 6, approximately $102 million worth of cryptocurrencies were withdrawn from the Ethereum side of Multichain 's Fantom bridge, along with $666,000 from Dogechain and $5 million from Moonriver. The withdrawals from Fantom Bridge's Ethereum smart contracts included 7,214 Wrapped Ether (WETH) tokens worth $13.6 million, 1,024 Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) worth $31 million, and USD tokens worth $58 million.
The significant outflows raised suspicions among on-chain observers, who speculated that it could be an exploit or hack. PeckShield, a blockchain security firm, alerted the Multichain team to the Fantom bridge transaction, suggesting they investigate the matter. another observer flagged the Dogechain transaction, referring to it as "Dogechain multi-chain exhaustion."
At the time of reporting, it was unclear whether the contracts were drained or if the large sums were simply withdrawn by users. Multichain acknowledged the abnormal activity on their Twitter account, stating that they were uncertain about what had happened and were curr ently conducting an investigation. Multichain operates as a multi-party computation (MPC) bridge network, ensuring the secure transfer of assets between different chains.
The encryption keys controlling the asset bridging process in Multichain's network are divided into multiple shards and distributed across the network to prevent unauthorized withdrawals. However, the platform has been facing technical issues in recent weeks, with the CEO report ed missing and various unforeseen circumstances causing delays. These issues have affected transaction processing and led to Binance suspending the withdrawal of certain multi-chain derivative tokens.
The incident has sparked concerns within the cryptocurrency community about the security and reliability of MPC bridge platforms, highlighting the need for robust security measures and thorough auditing of such systems. The investigation into the outflows will shed light on the nature of the event and its impact on users and the platform's overall operations.
