In a Surprising Turn of Events, The FBI Reportedly ConDucted A Raid On the Residence of Jesse Powell, CO-FOUNDER of Kraken, in March. Investigation Revolve S Around Allegrations of Hacking and CyberStalking Direct at a Nonprofit Arts Collective, The Verge Center for the Arts, which Powell himself founded. As reported by the New York Times on July 6, sources familiar with the matter revealed that Powell allegedly obstructed access to emails and other communications from contributors to the nonprofit. The FBI, in conjunction with the US Attorney' s Office for the Northern District of California, has been investigating Powell since at least September 2022.
During the search at Powell's home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, electronic devices were reportedly seized by authorities. However, it is important to note that Powell has not been charged with any crimes at this point, according to information available. Powell's attorney, Brandon Fox , emphasized that the focus of the investigation was centered around allegations made by the nonprofit and did not pertain to Powell's involvement in the cryptocurrency space. A spokesperson for Kraken also reportedly confirmed this distinction.
Despite these developments, Kraken remains one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the United States, currently holding the second position behind Coinbase, as per CoinMarketCap data. It is worth mentioning that Kraken faced enforcement action by the SEC in February for its f ailure to register the offering and sale of its staking service program. As a result, the company reached a settlement with securities regulators, agreeing to pay a substantial $30 million fine to resolve the matter.
