A newly elected pro-Bitcoin Prime Minister has taken office in the Pacific Islands of Fiji. New leader Sitiveni Rabuka took office in the Fiji office on December 24.
According to Cointelegraph, Lord Fusitu'a, a Tongan aristocrat and former member of the Tongan Parliament, revealed the latest news via Twitter and explained to Rabuka how "Fiji can use bitcoin fiat currency like Tonga" and may be two "Pacific fiat currencies in 2023", Currency Act". Tonga’s timetable for introducing Bitcoin as legal tender is public and could be passed by February 2023. According to reports, Tonga's geographic location and history pose economic and developmental challenges for Fiji. It is believed that Bitcoin’s ability to improve financial inclusion in Fiji is important given the country’s geography and economics.
"Like Tonga, how do we nationalize bitcoin mining and specifically how we're going to do geothermal volcano mining so they can both do the same thing and take advantage of the vast amount of hydropower and other renewable stranded energy they have, and We didn't," Fustua said.
