Generative AI, a technology that has demonstrated its versatility in various industries, has found a new application in the sports sector. Scout Adviser, an artificial intelligence (AI) tool developed on IBM's "watsonx" platform, is set to assist Spanish soccer team Sevilla FC in identifying potential players through AI analysis. IBM's announcement on its blog revealed that Scout Adviser would analyze Sevilla FC's database of potential recruits, employing natural language processing and underlying models to generate a list of players that align with the team's requirements.
IBM explained that Scout Adviser considers numerous factors when evaluating potential players, including quantitative data such as physical attributes, performance metrics, and qualitative unstructured data like text analysis from over 200,000 scouting reports. Player recruitment in elite sports, especially football, involves substantial financial investment, long-term contracts, and uncertainty regarding return on investment (ROI). Scout Adviser, with its combination of existing metrics and generative AI, aims to provide a competitive advantage by bridging the gap between metric-based scouting and the challenging-to-measure human behavior.
While traditional player recruitment heavily relies on subjective human observations and limited data analysis, often constrained by time and considering only a few factors, IBM's Scout Adviser enhances the talent identification and decision-making process for Sevilla FC. It is emphasized that the football club will not solely rely on artificial intelligence; scouts and analysts will continue to play a crucial role. The Scouting Consultant, informed by club scouts' descriptions of key player characteristics, generates a curated list of candidates and produces comprehensive reports on each player.
The positive impact of artificial intelligence on various industries and economies is acknowledged, with Vatican AI expert Brother Paul Benanti describing the technology as "absolutely positive" and a manifestation of human intelligence. In support of responsible AI adoption, Ana Paula de Assis, Chairman and General Manager at IBM Europe, Middle East, and Africa, highlighted that when used correctly, artificial intelligence can bring transformative benefits to businesses across diverse sectors. However, the World Economic Forum's 19th Global Risks Report emphasizes the importance of addressing potential negative impacts of AI technologies, including unintended consequences.
