Authorities in the German state of Saxony have seized approximately 50,000 Bitcoins as part of an investigation into copyright infringement. Saxony state police collaborated with tax authorities and prosecutors to confiscate the BTC, allegedly linked to two German and Polish citizens who had acquired the cryptocurrency through proceeds from pirated works. The individuals reportedly voluntarily transferred the seized bitcoins to an official wallet provided by the police. The current value of the confiscated Bitcoin is estimated at approximately $2.17 billion.
It is unclear when the individuals involved in the alleged copyright infringement purchased the Bitcoin, but the substantial amount suggests it may have been acquired when cryptocurrency prices were lower. The police emphasized that a final decision on the use of the confiscated bitcoins has not been made. This move by German authorities adds to the growing global trend of law enforcement agencies seizing cryptocurrencies in connection with various criminal activities.
In October 2023, data from Glassnode indicated that U.S. authorities had seized a total of 210,429 BTC in connection with criminal investigations. The cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase reported receiving 1,906 information requests from German authorities between the fourth quarter of 2022 and the third quarter of 2023. The anti-piracy operation in Saxony highlights the increasing cooperation between law enforcement and regulatory agencies in monitoring and addressing cryptocurrency-related crimes.
