Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has initiated legal action against two Chinese nationals, alleging that they utilized Google's platforms to develop fraudulent cryptocurrency applications that garnered over 100,000 downloads.
The lawsuit, filed in a New York federal court on April 4, accuses the defendants of leveraging Google Play and YouTube to upload and promote deceptive crypto apps. According to Bloomberg's report on the same day, Alphabet contends that the individuals engaged in numerous instances of wire fraud before resorting to an extortion scheme.
These fraudulent applications are crafted to mimic legitimate digital asset investments, deceiving users into depositing funds that they cannot subsequently withdraw. Despite Google's ongoing efforts to remove such deceptive apps, many still manage to evade its fraud detection mechanisms.
The two individuals began uploading extortionate apps as early as 2019, exploiting Google's platforms for their illicit activities. Halimah DeLaine Prado, Google's General Counsel, emphasized the lawsuit's importance in safeguarding users, stating that it represents a firm stance against those seeking to exploit the platform's users.
According to a post by Scam Sniffer on April 2, phishing scams incurred approximately $71 million in losses in March alone, with 77,529 victims—a notable 50% increase compared to February. In the first quarter of 2024, phishing scams led to losses totaling $173 million, with ERC-20 tokens on the Ethereum network accounting for 90% of the stolen assets.
Phishing scams, which involve attackers using social engineering tactics to extract sensitive information or deploy malware, pose a significant threat, particularly in the cryptocurrency realm. The rise of hacking and exploits has raised concerns across the crypto industry, particularly concerning decentralized finance applications. In 2023, cryptocurrency hackers and scammers collectively lost $1.8 billion, with the North Korean Lazarus Group accounting for 17% of these losses, as per a report from Immunefi released on December 28.
