Greek Prime Minister Kryiakos Mitsotakis revealed on October 19 the formation of an advisory committee tasked with crafting Greece's national strategy for artificial intelligence (AI). Citing the rapid advancements in AI, the Greek government considers it crucial for the country to establish this committee to prepare for the technology's development and application.
Mitsotakis emphasized that organizing the adoption of AI is imperative before it becomes an everyday reality, emphasizing that AI's relevance is more about the present than the future. To lead the committee, MIT computer science professor Konstantinos Daskarakis has been appointed, and it includes professionals from various fields such as technology, ethics, law, and science. The committee will also incorporate Greek researchers and scientists residing outside Greece to provide their expertise.
Daskalakis has outlined the committee's coordinated efforts to help Greece join the international AI initiative under the International Organization for Artificial Intelligence (IOAI). This initiative aims to strengthen Greece's position in the global AI landscape.
One of the core responsibilities of the advisory committee is to create policy recommendations and offer guidance for a long-term national AI strategy. The AI strategy will encompass an analysis of its implications for the economy and society, with a focus on boosting productivity, fostering innovation, and enhancing local infrastructure.
Greece is one of the 27 EU member states subject to the forthcoming EU Artificial Intelligence Act. This act will bring regulations and standards governing AI applications in Europe, with a particular focus on ensuring AI systems' safety, transparency, and adherence to ethical norms. In early October, EU officials revealed their intentions to impose more stringent regulations on large-scale AI models like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Meta's Llama 2, highlighting the growing emphasis on AI governance within the EU.
