A claim from an anonymous hacking group asserts the theft of personal information belonging to roughly 300,000 customers of Bitcoin. The announcement came through the pseudonymous cybersecurity account Vx-underground on a social media platform. Besides personal data, the hacking group claimed possession of about 70,000 instances of customer selfie verification data. They purportedly obtained details like occupation, physical addresses, Social Security numbers, and other sensitive information from Coin Cloud, the ATM company in question. Vx-underground reported that the hackers had data pertaining to US residents as well as users from Brazil.
The hacking group also claimed access to the source code of Coin Cloud's backend systems. As of the latest update, the company hasn't issued an official statement regarding the reported breach and alleged data theft.
Earlier this year, the crypto ATM operator Coin Cloud filed for bankruptcy. On February 8, the company announced its intent to file for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Chris McAlary, the company's CEO and president, stated that this decision aimed to enable them to restructure their debts and safeguard the interests of creditors. The bankruptcy filing outlined the company's liabilities in the range of $100 million to $500 million, with assets estimated between $50 million to $100 million, as per a filing from February 7.
