The aftermath of the HECO Chain exploit reveals a complex web of cryptocurrency transactions aimed at anonymizing stolen funds. Wallet addresses linked to the exploit have transferred and anonymized nearly 40,392 Ethereum through the Cryptocurrency mixing protocol Tornado Cash within a span of eight days. PeckShield, a cryptocurrency investigator, has identified 19 outbound transfers from the exploit addresses to Tornado Cash addresses, totaling approximately $145.7 million worth of stolen ether.
In an attempt to obfuscate the trail of stolen funds, the majority of the transferred funds were sent to one Tornado Cash address, while a smaller transaction of 0.2 ETH, equivalent to $699, was directed to another Tornado Cash address. Notably, the largest single transfer amounted to 11,300 ETH, valued at approximately $39.5 million. Cryptocurrency hackers often utilize Tornado Cash as a means to anonymize ownership of illicitly obtained funds.
Coinciding with these activities, an account associated with the $24 million Rocket Pool hack from September 2023 recently transferred 3,700 ETH to Tornado Cash for similar purposes. Moreover, hackers from North Korea's Lazarus Group have resumed using Tornado Cash as a laundering mechanism for stolen funds. This resurgence comes despite Tornado Cash's previous sanction by the U.S. Treasury Department in August 2022 for facilitating the laundering of over $1 billion in illicit funds, including those linked to the Lazarus Group.
The legal landscape surrounding Tornado Cash remains tumultuous, with co-founder Roman Storm facing charges related to money laundering and operating an unlicensed money transfer business. Storm, along with alleged co-conspirator Roman Semenov, faces legal proceedings in a U.S. District Court. Additionally, recent developments within the Arbitrum DAO saw the removal of a proposal aimed at funding the legal defense costs of Tornado Cash's co-founder. However, the reason behind this removal remains unclear, signaling ongoing uncertainty surrounding the project's legal challenges.
