Cryptocurrency mining firm Hive Blockchain has rebranded itself as Hive Digital Technologies to better align with its expansion into artificial intelligence (AI). The Vancouver-based company stated on July 12 that the name change emphasizes its focus on graphics processing unit (GPU) technology and cloud computing. The CEO of Hive, Aydin Kilic, explained that the company's mission is to advance AI and support the Web3 ecosystem, and the new name better reflects their commitment to emerging digital technologies beyond just blockchain.
Hive plans to leverage its large fleet of 38,000 Nvidia GPUs to offer more efficient cloud hosting services as an alternative to major providers. With the belief that artificial intelligence and machine learning will drive significant demand for GPU computing, Hive aims to cat er to small and mid -sized businesses in this growing market. While most mining companies concentrate on proof-of-work cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Hive stands out by using GPUs to mine Ethereum on a large scale.
The profitability of GPU mining for Ethereum is expected to decline significantly after the completion of the Ethereum network's transition to a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism in September 2022. This change eliminates the need for miners in the traditional sense. Despite this upcoming shift, Hive's rebranding reflects its broader strategic vision to position itself as a leading provider of GPU infrastructure and services for various digital technologies, including AI.
Hive Digital Technologies follows in the footsteps of other mining companies that have opted to drop the term "blockchain" from their names. Riot Blockchain, a Bitcoin mining firm, underwent a similar rebranding on January 3, becoming Riot Platforms to reflect its diversification into various business operations. These name changes signify the evolving nature of the industry as companies adapt to new technologies and explore opportunities beyond their initial focus on blockchain-based mining.
