A group of 97 Democrats in the US House of Representatives has established an artificial intelligence (AI) task force with the aim of developing new legislation related to the burgeoning AI industry.
Announced on August 15, the NDP coalition introduced the AI task force to collaborate with President Joe Biden's administration, stakeholders, and lawmakers from both sides of the aisle. Their objective is to craft "sensible bipartisan policies to address this emerge ing technology."
The task force's scope encompasses a variety of concerns, including optimizing the use of AI to spur economic growth while ensuring that individuals displaced by AI advancements remain employed. Rep. Derek Kilmer, who will lead the AI task force, told CNBC that the primary focus will be countering the spread of misinformation and addressing the rise of sophisticated AI-generated deepfakes online, which are sources of increasing concern.
Kilmer emphasized the need for legislative response, stating, "There's a real concern that AI might generate disinformation, a real concern about the misuse of advanced AI models." He added that Congress needs to act quickly to understand and address these issues, Elected officials , experts in academia, and top executives from major tech companies have all voiced concerns about the potential risks posed by artificial intelligence.
Earlier, in May, Vice President Kamala Harris, along with key advisors to President Biden, held a meeting with CEOs from the AI industry to discuss apprehensions regarding AI-related risks. In June, President Biden himself convened with artificial intelligence experts in Silicon Valley for discussions on similar subjects.
