IBM unveiled a $500 million enterprise AI venture fund on November 7, signaling its commitment to driving the development of generative AI technology for enterprise applications. While 2023 has seen the rise of generative AI products like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard aimed at consumers, IBM is focusing its generative AI efforts on the enterprise market. The company's existing enterprise-level solutions, including the Watson X platform and various cloud offerings, are at the forefront of this initiative.
Rob Thomas, Senior Vice President at IBM, emphasized the potential of generative AI technology to drive productivity and profitability in the coming decade. He noted that artificial intelligence is projected to generate nearly $16 trillion in productivity by 2030. With the launch of the IBM Enterprise Artificial Intelligence Venture Fund, IBM aims to harness the transformative power of artificial intelligence to deliver tangible, positive results for the company and its partners.
While specific investment details are yet to be disclosed, the $500 million fund will focus primarily on generative AI technologies. The fund's investments will span the spectrum of AI companies, from early-stage startups to high-growth enterprises, according to an official company blog post. IBM's recent investments have demonstrated a commitment to supporting the growth of enterprise AI startups and open source platforms.
In August, IBM participated in a $235 million Series D round for Hugging Face, a leading generative AI company known for its extensive Transformer library, which underpins generative pre-trained Transformer (GPT) AI models. IBM has consistently invested in enterprise AI startups and has actively supported open source platforms, models, and protocols. One such example is the company's participation in the Series A round of Hidden Layer, a machine learning security platform. Hugging Face's CEO, Clem Delangue, expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating that IBM's involvement would accelerate their impact on AI through the IBM Enterprise AI Venture Fund.
IBM's focus on the enterprise sector underscores the strategic importance of AI technology for improving productivity and driving profitability in businesses, and this substantial investment reinforces the company's commitment to this endeavor.
