Immutable, a Web3 gaming platform, has joined forces with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to expand opportunities for game developers as AWS broadens its startup accelerator program. According to an Immutable blog post on October 10, AWS has added Immutable to its list of companies participating in its Independent Software Vendor (ISV) acceleration program, which offers software solutions that either run on or integrate with AWS.
Developers looking to create on the Immutable blockchain can also join AWS Activate, a program providing benefits like technical support, training, and $100,000 in AWS cloud credits. John Kearney, AWS Australia's head of startups, expressed that Immutable is a prime example of an Australian startup with a global reach. He reiterated AWS's commitment to using its infrastructure to scale Web3 game development.
Immutable relies on Amazon EventBridge and AWS Lambda, two serverless services that use events to connect application components. This enables the platform to enhance scalability, making it capable of handling ten times more collaborative games.
Some concerns have arisen about the centralization of gaming on Ethereum and its dependence on Amazon, the leader in the cloud services market, holding approximately one-third of the market share. Michael Powell, head of product marketing at Immutable, addressed these concerns by explaining that the idea of decentralization championed by blockchain purists can be a significant departure from the reality of where game developers are actually building.
In August, Immutable commenced public testing of its zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) in collaboration with Polygon Labs. The zkEVM is expected to lower development costs for game developers while preserving the security and network effects associated with the Ethereum ecosystem.
Immutable achieved a valuation of $2.5 billion in March 2022 following a $200 million Series C funding round, which was primarily led by Singaporean state-owned investment firm Temasek.
