In a year-end announcement on December 18, Improbable, a metaverse technology company, revealed the sale of its gaming entity, The Multiplayer Group (MPG), to Keywords Studios for £76.5 million ($97.1 million). Improbable's co-founder and CEO, Herman Narula, expressed enthusiasm about this move, citing Keywords Studios as a "like-minded business partner" and looked forward to seeing MPG embark on its next phase. Keywords Studios is known for its collaborations with prominent gaming industry giants such as Activision Blizzard, Bethesda, Zenimax, Epic Games, and 2K.
Narula highlighted that nurturing businesses in sports, Web3, and fashion aligns with their core philosophy, enabling them to deliver sustained value. The sale of MPG to Keywords Studios was a strategic move in line with their 2024 risk strategy, having initially acquired MPG in 2019 for approximately £30 million. Improbable's CEO also shared predictions for 2024, emphasizing the continued relevance and significance of the Metaverse and Web3 technologies in the future.
Narula projected significant growth in the Metaverse in 2024, driven by the convergence of gaming, VR/XR, and Web3. He foresees the virtual world of 2024 defining the future of virtual events, with an increasing number of businesses gravitating toward decentralized Metaverse platforms. According to him, brands are transitioning from experimental phases on platforms towards seeking sovereignty and adopting the right business model, thus pushing for more experiences in a decentralized environment.
Improbable, backed by SoftBank, also anticipates increased consolidation and streamlining across gaming, Web3, and cryptocurrency sectors by 2024, resulting in a more robust and coherent startup ecosystem. In 2023, the company collaborated with Major League Baseball to create a virtual ballpark, allowing fans to engage in games within a digital reality. Additionally, Improbable predicts the emergence of more hybrid experiences combining physical and digital elements in gaming, alongside a growing utilization of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in content creation and various business applications.
Peter Lipka, the company's COO, highlighted the ongoing revolution brought by AI in business operations, predicting that AI-generated 3D interactive objects will become accessible by 2024. Notably, Improbable's outlook aligns with other industry experts, as GameFi executives Yat Siu and Johnson Yeh anticipate a surge in users entering Web3 through blockchain gaming in the upcoming year.
