College students hoping to intern with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are in luck the regulator has opened applications for its Fall 2023 Scholars Program.
The SEC is looking for "interns" for its business and legal programs, which cost $15.09 to $28.83 an hour for interns at its Washington, D.C. headquarters. The minimum wage range for this business plan is lower than the current DC minimum wage of $16.10.Typically, however, most companies in the United States are not legally obliged to pay interns if the employment relationship meets the "primary beneficiary test" set forth in the Fair Labor Standards Act.
The SEC's legal program also pays more generously, advertising rates between $23.47 and $35.27 an hour for its regional and Washington, D.C. offices. The programs target currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students to participate in a 10-week internship, which begins Aug. 28 and ends Nov. 3.
Both programs are open in other U.S. states for the regulator's regional offices in California, Colorado, Florida and Georgia, according to job postings. As part of the application, interested persons need to select the minimum pay scale at which they are willing to accept the position. The post said the SEC is looking for people who study blockchain, distributed ledger technology, computer science or cybersecurity, among many other fields of study.
Last May, the SEC expanded its cyber division by nearly 50%. The unit includes the "Crypto Assets" and "Cyber" divisions, which oversee the regulatory sector and help decide where to take enforcement action. Those interested in an internship must submit an application by April 3.
