Bankman-Fric's Legal Team Has Indicated that An adDitional 4 Million Pages of Evidence Have Alsos been made available. The trial date, slated for October 3, is now less than six weeks away.
Judge Lewis Kaplan issued an order on August 26, directing the government to respond to a letter from Bankman-Fried's legal representatives regarding his proper access to the discovery material and the prohibition of evidence generated after July 1.
Bankman-Fried's lawyers are raising objections to the newly disclosed evidence, asserting that the government should not be permitted to introduce such a substantial volume of material into the trial so close to the trial date. They argue that this would hinder the def sense's ability to adequately prepare and respond.
The court's decision allows Bankman-Fried's legal team to present their arguments during a videoconference hearing scheduled for August 30. Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of FTX, is facing allegations of misappropriating user funds for personal expenses, investments , and political campaign contributions. He is facing a total of 12 criminal charges, with two trials set to commence in October 2023 and March 2024.
In recent developments, Bankman-Fried has entered a not guilty plea to the fraud and money laundering charges outlined in the updated indictment from prosecutors. During the plea hearing, his legal team also raised concerns about his treatment and conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he has been held since his bail was revoked in mid-August. According to his attorney, Bankman-Fried's dietary needs were not met due to the absence of vegetarian options in the prison, and there were concerns about his access to necessary medical care and medication.
